Tips for visiting Valley of the Kings in Luxor:⁠ Tips for visiting Valley of the Kings in Luxor:⁠ ⁠ 1. Arrive early. It opens at 6:00 am and most tour groups arrive at 9:00 am. Be sure to get there early so you have enough time to explore without the crowds. ⁠ ⁠ 2. Choose wisely. The entrance fee (240 EGP) only allows you to see 3 out of 8 tombs, so it's important to figure out which you want to see beforehand. We visited the Tomb of Ramses III, Ramses IV, and Seti II. ⁠ ⁠ There are also 3 additional tombs you can visit with extra ticket purchases. We also paid 100 EGP to see the Tomb of Ramses V & VI, which I highly recommend. You can also pay to visit the Tomb of Seti I for 1,000 EGP and the Tomb of Tutankhamun for 300 EGP. ⁠ ⁠ 3. Make sure to bring enough cash. This had the most expensive entrance fees to any site we saw in Egypt - even compared to the pyramids and Luxor temples. On top of the 240 EGP entrance fee, you may also spend an additional 100 EGP to visit additional tombs, 300 EGP for photography (phone photos and videos are free), and 4 EGP for a 3 minutes tram ride to the tombs. ⁠ ⁠ 4. If you want to take a photo of yourself without other tourists, either arrive early or have patience. There are a lot of tour groups constantly moving in and out of each tomb, but if you wait about 10 minutes, there sometimes is a 1-2 minute break before the next tour group arrives. But if you visit, make sure to see at least a few! Here are the ones I'd recommend: Mosque of Ibn Tulun, Sultan Hassan Mosque, Mosque of Mohammad Ali, and Al-Azhar Mosque.⁠ ⁠ Have you ever been to a mosque? Scamming & Hassling in Egypt (Part 3).⁠ ⁠ Even Scamming & Hassling in Egypt (Part 3).⁠ ⁠ Even though we had our fair share of scams and hassles to deal with on a daily basis, this doesn't mean we had a terrible time. After a few days of being in Egypt, we realized if we were going to enjoy our trip, we needed to readjust our expectations and accept their tourism industry for what it was. ⁠If you mentally prepare before your trip, I think you'll be fine. ⁠ ⁠ And honestly, I would do Egypt again on our own without any guide. Yes, a guide or tour group would make things easier but we just love being in control of our time - especially since we love taking photos.⁠ ⁠ Overall, I think Egypt is worth visiting. The beautiful sites, history, and delicious food are all reasons to go! So why did I write a (not so positive) three-part series?⁠ ⁠ 1. I want to help you understand what to expect as a tourist. Egypt isn't a relaxing place to visit - but it will be an adventure of a lifetime. ⁠ ⁠ 2. Many travel bloggers tend to only sing the praises of the destinations they visit. But this isn't always an accurate representation. Yes, everyone has different experiences but I assume if you follow me, it's because you want to know what my experiences were and what I think. And while I am privileged to be able to travel, that doesn't mean I have to like everything about the places I visit. ⁠ ⁠ 3. Similar to my second point, pictures don't tell the whole story. Scamming & Hassling in Egypt (Part 2).⁠ ⁠ Unfo Scamming & Hassling in Egypt (Part 2).⁠ ⁠ Unfortunately, our experience at the pyramids wasn't a one-time instance. In fact, just about every famous location we visited has a similar story about some tourism employee hovering just waiting to get paid to leave. ⁠ ⁠ Here are other situations we encountered:⁠ ⁠ • At Medinet Habu Temple and every temple in Egypt, there are security guards with guns and random men (like museum volunteers) who will ask where you are from in order to strike up a conversation. If you respond, they will try to show you around and give you information about the site. However, since most of the individuals don't know English, they will just say random words relevant to the temple or structure, like a famous god or pharaoh, and then point to some hieroglyph about it. Even if you ignore them, they will walk right next to you and follow you around. You have to tell them no or 'la' in Arabic several times and shake your head or harshly wave them away so they will leave you alone and move onto someone else. ⁠ ⁠ Just FYI, this will happen at every site if you are traveling without an official guide. ⁠ ⁠ • Outside the Temple of Kom Ombo, we were bombarded by vendors trying to sell scarfs and bracelets. They would drape scarfs over our shoulders and if you tried giving it back they would say no, but then if you walked away they said you must pay them. I even had a child grab my hand and place a scarab pendant in it. I didn't want it and tried to give it back but he just refused to take it. So I finally dropped it on the ground and walked the other way. ⁠ ⁠ These tactics are common all over Egypt. Unfortunately, it puts tourists in a difficult position. We want to be kind but they make it nearly impossible to do so. People don't want to just drop items onto the ground that locals are trying to sell because it's rude. But what choice do you have when they force them into your hands and won't take it back. ⁠ ⁠ Since these are not just one time only situations, it definitely tainted some of our experiences, and we often found ourselves mentally exhausted and relieved to be back at our hotel. ⁠ ⁠ To be continued ⁠ #hatshepsut #valleyofthekings #luxor
